The answer might surprise you.

Statistics from the San Antonio Heart Study, a longtime epidemiologic study conducted at the Health Science Center, paradoxically suggest that the more diet sodas a person drinks, the greater the chance he or she will become overweight or obese.

Extra weight is a strong risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes.

'On average, for each diet soft drink our participants drank per day, they were 65 percent more likely to become overweight during the next seven to eight years, and 41 percent more likely to become obese,' said Sharon Fowler, M.P.H., faculty associate in the division of clinical epidemiology. She presented the finding at the American Diabetes Association’s 65th Annual Scientific Sessions.

Fowler’s colleague, Ken Williams, M.S., assistant professor in clinical epidemiology, analyzed questionnaire and health outcome data from participants in the San Antonio Heart Study, which began in 1979. Michael P. Stern, M.D., professor and chief of clinical epidemiology, is the study’s principal investigator.

Williams detected a 'dose-response' effect: those who drank the most diet soft drinks had the highest incidence of weight gain. The researchers said it could be that participants whose weight already was increasing switched to diet sodas to try to stop their weight gain. 'What our analyses indicate for sure is that drinking diet soft drinks will not protect a person from the health effects of the rest of his or her lifestyle,' Fowler said."

Uncle Sam Encourages Americans to Lose Belly Fat


Just as an increased tax on cigarettes helped to cut down smoking - Uncle Sam hopes that a "sin tax" on certain unhealthy foods may help people lose belly fat.


Many places in America are introducing measures to tackle obesity and federal action could follow Policies with added weight The Economist: "HOLIDAY cheer can give way to new year's gloom when over-indulgers realise that it may take months to shed the pounds put on as a result of festive gluttony. But next year the desire to slim down may gain an unexpected ally: the government. On Tuesday December 16th New York’s governor, David Paterson, announced a controversial plan to help the state’s fight against an obesity crisis while simultaneously replenishing New York’s empty coffers. In 2009 consumers will have to pay an 18% tax on non-diet sodas and sugary drinks.


Critics have denounced the new measure as a “sin tax”. The American Beverage Association, with an outrage only a notch or two below that which sparked the Boston Tea Party, has called Mr Paterson’s tax an unjust “money grab”. The beverage industry is fearful that the new tax will do to fizzy drinks what similar taxes did to smoking: push prices so high that it discourages consumers.


Mr Paterson has economics and the public interest on his side. The state has a $15 billion budget deficit and the new tax is estimated to generate $404m in its first year alone. It is also expected to reduce sugary-drink consumption by 5%. A study by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest showed that soft drinks were the single biggest contributor to calories in the American diet, and most studies link sugary sodas to both diabetes and obesity, which brings with it a whole range of other health problems. And the damage is already widespread. Nearly a quarter of New Yorkers under the age of 18 is obese, as is a third of all Americans."

Belly Fat: Are Scientists Going Crazy?


When it this madness going to stop?


In an article on Yahoo front page, "Kids with obesity-linked gene like fattening foods" - Scientists have somehow "discovered" a gene linked to obesity in children.


BUT are you ready for this?


They said the gene is actually not causing kids to be fat - it's apparently causing them to overeat!?


To test this study, they gave the children three meals including a mix of fruits and vegetables, ham, cheese, potato chips, chocolate candies and bread rolls.


WHAT?!?!


In my opinion, the test is inherently flawed and setting these children up for failure!! Kids crave junk food and if you put it in front of them - of course they're going to eat it!!


And, Mr. Scientist, do you want to know why these kids are getting fatter? Because you're feeding them JUNK!


Why not do the study with more fruits, vegetables, and whole foods? I'll bet that if you conducted the study with a wholesome and nutritious combination of fat burning foods - the kids would not only lose weight - they'd actually be healthier!


... and it's studies like this one that only confuses people into believing that, somehow, obesity is "not their fault" - when, in fact, a simple change in their lifestyle can stimulate a fascinating life-changing difference with more energy, vitality and a massive increase in their health!

3 Wrong Ways to Lose Belly Fat


Many people want to know how to effectively lose belly fat.

Today, I thought I'd dispel a few myths by talking about what NOT to do ...

1. Don't Diet! Depriving yourself of food and depleting yourself of essential nutritions is not the healthy way to lose belly fat.

2. Throw away those weight loss pills! They might work in the short-term, but they're likely to cause you to pack on more weight in the long term.

3. Say "no" to gut-wrenching exercise programs! Grueling exercise programs are often unsustainable and can create an acidic state in your body ... it's a "one step forward - two steps back" type of approach.

The best way to lose love handles is to consume a regular diet of fat burning foods - these are natural foods that help to restore the overall health of your body and flush away the fat.

For example, many people believe that avocados are "bad for you" because they contain a lot of fats - the truth is that a moderate amount of avocado consumption (in combination with other fat burning foods) will actually help you rid fat faster than almost every fad diet on the market! AND, you'll have increased energy, vibrancy and think a lot clearer too!

Secondly, properly performed cardio. Many people believe that they have to go to the gym and bust out a heart-pounding and massively intense workout. The truth is that properly performed cardio is enjoyable and has greater health benefits. Pushing yourself too hard is not the answer for losing weight fast - it's about control and pace.

Thirdly, why do love handle exercises that aren't going to produce quick results? Performed correctly, love handles exercises can help shape and firm up your waist quickly and help you create that beach body in no time!

Rid Love Handles: How Modern Medicine Gets in the Way of Your Health


People are so desperate to get rid of love handles - they'll try just about anything (even if it might kill them in the long run!).

In the age of profit hungry businesses, I don't know why I'm so surprised ... but reading the article below gives me the chills!

According to an article posted on Yahoo - scientists have identified a fatty substance that signals the brain when to stop eating - okay, fair enough - but what they decide to do with this information is down right disgusting!

Gut chemical may inspire new way to fight obesity - Yahoo! News: "The researchers then synthesized NAPE [a naturally occuring fat-derived chemical messenger] and injected it into the abdomen of the animals, whose appetites diminished greatly. When NAPE was delivered in much smaller amounts directly to the brain, it had the same effect on appetite as a larger dose injected into the bloodstream.

NAPE concentrated in the hypothalamus, an important brain structure known to regulate hunger, and inhibited neurons that stimulate appetite, they said.

When the rodents were given extra NAPE for five days, they animals ate less and lost weight, the researchers said.

With obesity on the rise in many parts of the world as people eat fattier diets and get less exercise, scientists are eager to find new ways to combat the problem. These findings could help guide efforts to create better drugs to suppress appetite and reduce obesity, the researchers said.

'Clearly what we have in mind is trying to find new approaches that regulate food intake. And this may be a new pathway that one could target to treat obesity,' Shulman said in a telephone interview."

So ... how do you like that ... "with obesity on the rise in many parts of the world as people eat fattier diets and get less exercise, scientists are eager to find new ways to COMBAT THE PROBLEM"

Now, I don't claim to be a rocket scientist - but didn't they already state the problem "fattier diets and get less exercise"?!?!?!

So ... wouldn't it only make sense that one could lose belly fat simply by eating a better diet of fat burning foods and getting more exercise? DUH!

Oh, wait, but then again ... where's the money in that?
